The future
of work in administrative jobs, supported by Bruxelles
Formation (2000) |
|
The research was carried out in 2000 for the public agency for vocational
training of the Brussels Region, IBFFP (Institut Bruxellois Francophone
de Formation Professionnelle), within the framework of its project
"Prospective", supported by the European Social Fund.
This research focuses on the tendencies that are shaping
the future of work in administrative jobs. These tendencies mainly
concern :
- structural changes in service activities, related to ICT: importance
of communication, mediation of technology in service relation,
codification of knowledge, development of self-service and online
services;
- work transformations that occur as a consequence and their impacts
on work organisation and job requirements and content (polyvalence,
specialisation, new balance between administrative tasks and relational
tasks, etc.);
- evolution of qualifications and skills requirements and the
challenges for training.

Les tendances structurantes dans l'évolution des
métiers administratifs
Rapport pour Bruxelles Formation, 2000.
Nowadays, administrative jobs are less and less fragmented,
particularly because they all use the same technological infrastructure.
Administrative services become both more customised and more
standardised. A new balance appears between administrative
tasks and relational tasks. The issue of competence becomes
central, with a mix of professional and social competences.
These general tendencies are illustrated by case studies in
specific jobs: secretarial staff, accountancy, documentation
and front office staff. This prospective approach gives some
paths for the future of vocational training in these fields.
